The Athenaeum is one of Alexandria’s two surviving examples of Greek revival neo-classic architecture open to the public. The elegant rooms have 24-foot high coved ceilings, enormous windows and beautiful woodwork. The exterior features four soaring Doric columns across the portico and walls of stucco over stone and brick. It is a beautiful setting for any art exhibition!
Art Optimism features works from DC, Virginia, and Maryland artists that explore concepts related to climate change. The common leitmotif: optimism for improving our footprint on the planet. These works inspire rather than threaten, celebrate rather than scare, and explore new materials and techniques that help present a positive message about climate change and productive ways to meet the associated challenges.
My painting, Winter Glow, was juried into this beautiful show and was created partially from a photograph and also from memory. I wanted to recreate the cold, peaceful stillness found on a winter day, the feel of the crisp air, yet a bit of warmth from the beautiful glow of the sun.
