Helen’s Sunflowers

Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows. It’s what the sunflowers do. Helen Keller

These sunflowers from my garden are a little bit of sunshine on a cloudy day!

Pear with Radishes

I enjoy painting with complementary colors to create a bit of polarity.

A small painting from one of my demonstrations. A simple grouping of radishes and a pear.

Maria’s Garden

Garden in May by Maria Oakey Dewing, ca. 1895, oil on canvas 23 5/8 x 32 1/2 in. (60.1 x 82.5 cm.), Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of John Gellatly

I love the work of Maria Oakey Dewing. She captured the wild beauty of her garden with its intertwined stems and frilly blooms.

Corner of My Garden

The artist is the confidant of nature, flowers carry on dialogues with him through the graceful bending of their stems and the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms. Every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards him. ~Auguste Rodin

My garden is a constant source of inspiration and I love how it changes with the seasons. Sometimes the fallen petals and the light is as beautiful as the blooms! My palette knife is my favorite tool to capture the light quickly before it changes.

Humility

Humility . . . God’s creations fill me with awe and I am humbled by the fleeting beauty His flowers.

The perfection of this delicate white rose was intriguing to paint.

My Garden, My Muse

Won’t you come into the garden? I would like my roses to see you. —Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Oh, the month of May in my garden—a painter’s dream!
All of my roses are blooming at the same time and no Japanese beetles!

Putto

A putto (Italian: [putto]; plural putti [putti] or puttoes) is a figure in a work of art depicted as a chubby male child, usually nude and sometimes winged.

This little putto can be found in the gardens outside Gari Melchers Studio and Home. I wanted to capture this wonderful statue and the essence of the light I saw that day. This piece was juried into the exhibition, Belmont Portrayed at Gari Melchers Studio and Home in Falmouth Virginia.

A Quick Sketch

“Draw Antonio, draw Antonio, draw and don’t waste time.”—Michelangelo

Sometimes family life gets hectic and it is hard to fit in time at the easel. Drawing is a great way to hone my skills. This is a quick 15-minute sketch of my son as he is watching TV. I need to heed the maestro’s words more often!
