Winter Fun with Kinder

I’m a Little Snowman

I’m a little snowman short and fat,
Here is my scarf and here is my hat.
When I see the snowfall,
Hear me shout
“All you children please come out!”

My kindergarten students had fun painting circles with white paint and creating a snowstorm with a qtip!

In our next class we worked on our shapes and scissor practice to create the details in our frosty collages! Each little snowman has his own personality . . . pretty darn cute!

Daisies in the Big Apple!

Drawing is a wonderful way to practice values. As a floral artist it is a challenge to work in just black and white, but I love the dramatic results and how it trains my eye to look for subtleties.

November

The crisp fall air, pumpkins, sunflowers and feelings of gratitude inspired me to paint this still life.

“Our Father, fill our hearts, we pray,
with gratitude Thanksgiving Day;
For food and raiment Thou dost give,
That we in comfort here may live.”
— Luther Cross, Thanksgiving Day

Zentangle Spiders

(Teacher sample shown above.)

5th Graders enjoyed working on zentangle spiders for a fun October art project.

First the students learned how to create a zentangle  by using a step out box. Then we reviewed the many ways that zentangles can be used to enhance an art project. Next we practiced how to use value to create the form of a simple sphere. In the following art class, we applied this knowledge to create the webs and spiders.

Line Landscapes

In art we discussed how lines are like building blocks and are one of the elements of art. 2nd graders practiced creating various lines from the worksheet below and then incorporated them into their landscapes, seascapes or cityscapes.

International Dot Day

On September 14th, we celebrated International Dot Day in the art classroom. The students listened to Peter H. Reynolds’ book,  The Dot and then created their own special “Marks” on 6-inch paper plates to make a collaborative piece of art. These budding artists also used their imagination to create something special with a single black dot.

International Dot Day began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book,  on September 15, 2009.

The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark.” What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.

And each year on International Dot Day–the inspiration continues. What started as a story in the pages of a book is transforming teaching and learning around the world as people of all ages re-discover the power and potential of creativity in all they do.

Zany for Zinnias

There is a natural ebb and flow to my garden.
I love how it changes as some flowers wither and fade and others pop up with exuberance to replace them.

These zinnias are like little fireworks of color and were fun to capture in paint.

Rosa Albus

One of my favorite local gardens is the Old Rose Garden at the historic Ben Lomond House. In May the old rose collection is in its glory surrounded by peonies, white trellises and the dappled shade of the nearby trees. I know this hallowed spot will serve as my muse for many more paintings!

The rose is without explanation; She blooms, because she blooms.
— Angelus Silesius

According to Diana Lambdin Meyer,  freelance writer for Triangle Gardener magazine (https://www.trianglegardener.com/historic-roses-at-the-ben-lomond-house-rose-garden-manassas-va/), The Old Rose Garden was originally planted and maintained at a large estate in Manassas called Smitherwood. But in 1995, when the estate’s gardener became ill, the nearly 200 rose shrubs were donated to the local Lake Jackson Garden Club. In 1997, the garden club moved the roses to their present home on the grounds of the Ben Lomond Historic Site, where it is maintained by the Prince William County Park Authority.

All of the roses in the garden are from the past and the majority date from the 19th century or earlier. It’s regarded as one of the largest public gardens devoted to old roses in the U.S.  A few varieties were introduced as early as the 1500s, such as the ‘Rose of Lancaster’ (Rosa gallica officinalis)  and Maiden’s Blush (Rosa alba).  The American Beauty (Rosa meidaud) is the most popular in the garden.
