Watercolor Portrait: Naptime

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep:
May God guard me through the night
And wake me with the morning light.
Amen.
I love to capture everyday moments and this is a precious memory of my son sleeping with his favorite stuffed animal. I painted this with watercolor–the first medium I learned to use.

Morning Bouquet

Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day – like writing a poem or saying a prayer.Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Morning Bouquet: an almost daily paintwork–sketch available for sale!

A little alla prima painting from a beautiful arrangement I picked up at the grocery store.  (Alas, the japanese beetles are still feasting on my roses from my garden.)

A happy little accident–don’t these two painting look great together?
Each sketch compliments each other in composition and color!

Summertime

Summertime, an’ the livin’ is easy . . .at least for an art teacher!

Why all of these mini sketches?  Daily practice is a great way to hone my painting skills by painting in a limited amount of time (2 hours or under) and to practice my observational skills by squinting and simplifying my statements. Professional development for a painter!

Backlit

Backlit: an almost daily paintwork–sketch available for sale!

In June, there is a lull in the garden. The Japanese Beetles are eating my roses and my lilies or gladioli haven’t quite bloomed yet. But I am fortunate to have a bright sunny spot that hollyhocks love! I was inspired by how the sun created a rim light on these flowers and I wanted to capture that impression in paint.

French Country

French Country: an almost daily paintwork–sketch available for sale!

I was inspired by the old-world charm of Provence, France with these blue hydrangea petals and golden, yellow sunflowers. French country decor is refined but relaxed and this arrangement reminded me of a bright, french country farm house.

What is your favorite decor style?

Nymphaea

This little alla prima painting was created from the Asian Garden at the Norfolk Botanical Garden.  It was a very hot day, but the shade of a tree and the tranquility of this beautiful spot inspired me.

Stargazers

Spring in the garden is a joy to behold! These stargazer lilies almost seemed to dance in the wind. If you look closely you can find rudbeckia and gladioli in the background.

Garden Glimpse

I love to visit the garden at Ben Lomond’s House in Manassas. The historic roses bloom along with peonies and climb a beautiful white trellis. It is a tranquil spot filled with history as the house was used by a field hospital by both the Union and the Confederate troops during the Civil War.
